Using Poedit for Localization (English to French)
1. Download & Install Poedit
- Get Poedit Free from poedit.net
(available for Windows, macOS, Linux).
- Install and open the application.
2. Open or Create a Translation File
- If you have a
.po
file (gettext format), open it in Poedit. - If starting from scratch, create a new translation and select English (en) as the source language and French (fr) as the target language.
3. Translate the Text
- Poedit lists all source strings in the left panel.
- Click each entry and type the French translation in the bottom panel.
- Use machine translation suggestions (Pro version) for faster translation.
4. Check for Errors
- Poedit highlights formatting issues (e.g., missing placeholders like
%s
). - Use the “Validate” button to check for syntax errors.
5. Save & Export
- Save your work as a
.po
file. - Poedit automatically generates a
.mo
(compiled) file needed by gettext-based applications. - Deploy the translated
.mo
file into your application.
